• Hiding away in corners or under plants

• Not wanting to mix with other fish

• Hanging under the water surface and gulping for oxygen

• Flicking body against pots and/or the bottom of the pond

• Repeatedly jumping out of the water

• Jerking and flicking of the fins

• Swaying from side to side

• Losing colour or weight

• Slime may form on the body or fins

• Scales may be lifted resembling a fir cone

• Part of their fins and/or tail may be missing

• Bruising or swelling of the body

• Gill plates may appear pale and sticky

• Scales missing

• Fins folded back

• White dots that are apparent on their fins

• Fecal droppings are slimy and pale in colour

• Close to the surface and breathing rapidly

• Protruding eyes
